DIRECTIONS to common cathedral:

Common cathedral is held every Sunday at 1pm, at the fountain on Boston Common (Brewer Fountain), near the corner of Park and Tremont Streets (the cross on the map below). This is at the Park Street subway stop where the Red Line meets the Green line.

Please note: Boston seems to be under constant construction, detours, new ramps etc., so caveat driver! The directions below are subject to change - bring a map or check the internet for directions, too.

Downtown Boston

FROM THE NORTH:

  • Take 93 South all the way into town, or 95 South to Rte 1 South.
  • When you are on the bridge into Boston, get over to your right and get off where it says Storrow Drive.
  • Follow signs for Storrow Drive, and then get off at the Government Center/Kendall Sq - Cambridge exit ( a left-hand exit ). Once on the exit ramp, stay to your left, as you don't want to cross the river into Cambridge. You will come to 2 traffic lights very close together and the elevated subway tracks above you.
  • Stay straight through the second set of lights, leaving a CVS store on your left. You are now on Charles Street at the foot of Beacon Hill - go through several traffic lights, staying to the left.
  • At the end of the one way section of Charles, you will be at another set of lights, with a Starbucks on your left and a bank on your right. Take a left here and go up Beacon Street with the Boston Common on your right, and at the top of the hill, the State House on your left.
  • Take a right, opposite the State House at traffic lights, onto Park Street (very short street) keeping the Common on your right.
  • Take a right at the lights at the end of the block, and you are now on Tremont, with another set of lights right there after the turn. On your left in the next block is St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral at 138 Tremont St. Three red doors, big wide steps and about five fat columns. The fountain should be visible across the street.

Note for common cathedral visiting congregations and those with things to drop off:

  • Double park and unload your stuff here. Common cathedral folk will come and help.

PARKING

FROM THE WEST:

Route 2 East:

  • Take Route 2 East, follow signs for Storrow Drive, and get on it! Stay on it all the way into an underpass (after Copley), don't get off at Arlington which is an in-tunnel exit). When you come up from the underpass, take your first possible right (not marked as an exit, just a tiny side street leading up Beacon Hill), go up to lights and take a right onto Charles Street.
  • If you miss the first right off Storrow Drive, get off at the next marked exit which will be for Government Center, Cambridge, and Kendall Sq. Stay to your right at the end of the exit at the light, and turn right, onto Charles Street leaving CVS on your left.
  • Go through several traffic lights, staying to the left. At the end of the one way section of Charles, you will be at another set of lights, with a Starbucks on your left and a bank on your right. Take a left here and go up Beacon Street with the Boston Common on your right, and at the top of the hill, the State House on your left.
  • Take a right, opposite the State House at traffic lights, onto Park Street ( very short street) keeping the Common on your right.

PARKING

Mass Pike (Rte 90) East:

  • Mass Pike (Rte 90) Get off at the Cambridge/Allston exit, and stay right on off ramp toward Cambridge.
  • Once off the ramp, take a right after the Guest Suites Hotel, and before the bridge goes over the river. You are now on Storrow Drive.
  • Stay on Storrow Drive all the way into an underpass (after Copley), don't get off at Arlington which is an in-tunnel exit). When you come up from the underpass, take your first possible right (not marked as an exit, just a tiny side street leading up Beacon Hill), go up to lights and take a right onto Charles Street.

PARKING

FROM THE SOUTH:

95 North:

  • Take 95 North to Mass Pike Eastbound (Rte 90). Follow Mass Pike instructions above.

93 North:

  • Take 93 North to South Station/Downtown/Mass Pike Extension exit. Be careful (lots of construction here) to head for South Station, not the Pike, but at the bottom of the ramp at the lights, you want to be in the LEFT lane (South Station is to the right).
  • Take a left at these lights and go straight through several lights. First you will be on Kneeland Street, with Chinatown on your right, and NE Medical Center on your left as landmarks. Kneeland becomes Stuart Street, and Tremont Street crosses it at the Theater District, so you'll see marquees, mostly on your left.
  • Stay straight through these lights at Tremont, but then you will turn right at the next set of lights. This will get you onto Charles Street.
  • At the next set of lights, stay straight, Charles cuts between the Public Garden on your left and Boston Common on your right.
  • If you are empty-handed, you can park in the Common Garage, entrance on your right once you are through the lights. If not, take the right at the next set of lights, onto Beacon Street.
  • Go up Beacon Street with the Boston Common on your right, and at the top of the hill, the State House on your left.
  • Take a right, opposite the State House at traffic lights, onto Park Street ( very short street) keeping the Common on your right.

Note for common cathedral volunteers:

  • Double park and unload your stuff here. Common cathedral folk will come and help.

PARKING

The Boston Common Garage on Charles street is the best parking unless your car is taller than a minivan. For tall vehicles, outdoor parking near Downtown Crossing is recommended.

  • To park, go along Tremont, staying center or leftish. At the end of Boston Common there are lights. The cross street is Boylston, Dunkin Donuts ahead on the right corner - go straight through the lights and take your first left down what looks like an alley, but is La Grange Street (opposite the Emerson Majestic Theater marquee), and there is parking on both your left and right. If you are driving a van, the lot on your right is cheaper (FitzInn). If in a car, the one on your left is cheaper (Allright). Park and walk back to the church.
  • If you prefer garage parking, circle the Common, taking a Right on Boylston at the Dunkin Donuts, right again onto Charles St (between the Public Garden on your left, and the Common on your right), and the entrance to the underground garage is halfway along on your right. Walk through the Common to the fountain near the corner of Park and Tremont Streets, below the Statehouse, and you will find us.
